Time for Chak De, India -- as said by Mr. N. R. Narayana Murthy

The other day, my wife and I were perhaps among the very few post-fifty people in the mostly-twentyish crowd watching the film Chak De in Bangalore. You had to be there to believe the shouts of joy that accompanied every goal India scored in the imaginary tournament in the movie.

The mood at the end was as if India had actually won the women’s world cup in hockey. I can appreciate this mood since I too felt similar joy and pride when hundreds of cameras clicked at me holding our national flag, on India and my being declared the winners of the E and Y world entrepreneur award among the forty-odd competing nations at Monaco in 2003. As I exited the theatre after watching Chak De that day, several youngsters asked me for my reaction to the movie. My answer was simple. I said I wanted to see the movie become a reality not just in hockey but in every sphere.

The recipe for such a success was most wonderfully conveyed by Shah Rukh Khan and those wonderful women hockey players in the movie. Let me recount them here. We have to identify as Indians first and rise above our affiliations with our states, religions and castes.

We must accept meritocracy and enthusiastically play the role we are best suited to. We must embrace discipline to strictly follow every step required for success. We have to put the interest of our nation ahead of our personal interests, subordinating our egos and biases. Finally, we have to put in tremendous hard work and make short term sacrifices for long term glory.

I have immense faith and optimism in the youth of this country. But, will we get our leaders to set examples for hundreds of millions of Indian youth? I wish more and more of our leaders see Chak De and learn these precious lessons.

A truly amazing sports film coming under YashRaj's banner. After a long time a film which catches the essence of sportsmanship, team spirit and above all the joy of winning. It's comparable to the masterpieces like "Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar", "Lagaan:Once Upon a Time In India" and "Bend It Like Beckham".

In brief, the film touched chord with me. It reminds me of the days when I was playing Hockey for IITG.

I feel the film nicely touched upon the following issues:
1) The sorry state of the sports infrastructure in India with the sports association itself politically motivated and bureaucratic in attitude. They themselves seem to lack belief in the players and it's more prominent in case of a women's team. The situation cannot be worse for hockey, which even happens to be our National sport.
2)Team Spirit -- Playing in a team and not being under self ego, one can beat any opponent, even if they may be having better infrastructure like training facilities.
3)We still recognize ourself by the state or caste we belong to rather than being recognized as an Indian.
4)NorthEastern States -- How the general people in Delhi / other Indian mainland view the people from the NE bordering states. It's a shame that they are still viewed as aliens or guests in their own country's capital. The only solution to this problem lies in ending their isolation and making moves for a possible larger integration and understanding of the people of NE by those in the mainland.
5)Cricket is the only sport in India which gets all the support, attention, fame, money, etc.

In brief, a film which teaches us sportsman spirit and how sometimes winning is everything that matters.

The markets plunged on account of heavy selling in scrips across sectors. The fall was in line with Asian peers. It was the biggest single-day loss for Sensex and Nifty since July 17.

The Sensex closed at 11,550.69 down 368 points. The Nifty lost 105 points to close at 3,366.

The BSE Small Cap Index lost 3.4 per cent to close at 5,829.30.

The BSE Midcap Index lost 3.4 per cent to close at 4,871.46.

All the BSE sectoral indices closed in the negative terrain.

I remember shaking hands with you during the convocation at IITG last yr. You were talking of globalisations and development.
But is this current reservation move in central univs. justified in the current globalised world? We should stleast leave out the premier institutes of our country like IITs and IIMs from such politically inspired moves.
Th social upliftment is not propertionate to the percentage of reservations in higher educational institutes. But instead I think, the Minister must focus his energy on the primary and secondary education, to provide a level playing field to children of every class/society. After all its more than just levying 2% educational tax and mid-day meals.
A strong will independent is required instead of trying to gain mere political mileage

The basic infrastructure including telecom and power has shown rapid development in NE region, with the improvement in law and order as well. Guwahati and Shillong are aiming for metropolitan status.
Moreover, its a not popularly known fact that this is the only region in India having "Community Information Centers (CICs)" at every block level. These centers can be very well exploited to become the IT hubs and its reach to the people can propel the development from grass-root level.

The 4.5 hr show (from 5:30 AM - 10 AM IST) kept me glued on my Sofa watching the run-up to the best film.The song "IT'S HARD OUT HERE FOR A PIMP" FROM HUSTLE & FLOW" was superb and no doubt it won the best original score.Reese Witherspoon won the best actress. Her performance in "Walk the Line" was great although my personal favourite was Keira Knightly with her performance in Pride and Prejudice.Finally it was Crash leading the way.
